Change

If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be?

  1. i would change the computers and get better ones with better internet acess and faster speed

  2. I would change one thing about our school/District is.... that i would take off the summer reading during the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  3. If there was one thing I would change about my school it would be the computers because our computers at school is very old and are very slow.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I would change the computer situation also- ours are pretty slow, huh?
Seriously, you don't like to read, or, would you rather pick your own books?

Pretty interesting about dress code- would you make it more strict or less strict?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Less strict, We already have to go to school and obey other adults. Why can't we be allowed to wear what we want? The Principles tell us it's cause of the unfortunate who cannot otherwise afford clothes. But we should be able to wear what we want to express ourself.

  6. We would like to add a park. Also, we would like faster internet. Two of us would really like to have more books, fiction and non-fiction, in the WVE library. Another student said all day recess would be nice.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Dress code. School Lunch would be better. The technology, less strict people.

    ReplyDelete
  8. When you say technology, do you mean different kinds, less strict restrictions on how you can use it? I am curious to know more.

  9. I would change how each of my AP teachers have 2-3 different blogs, facebook groups, their own personal websites, wikis, wordpress accounts,e-mail us, etc. It would be so much easier for me as a student to not have to check 3 different sites for one class, as well as for other classes and still keep up with homework. Can't they all just use facebook? We're all on there everyday and I simply do not have the hours avaliable to me to keep up with so many websites. And then there there's the issue of students who do not have internet access at home. I go to Spring Woods HS so we have extended library hours, however for students that work after school, this does nothing. Yesterday in one of my AP classes, a student mentioned this to our teacher, to which she shrugged her shoulders and said "Well, I guess you'll get a zero then." This really concerned me and I as a student don't know how to fix this problem. Thanks for listening and caring about what students think.

  10. I want to follow up this comment from Lydia. Lydia, I accidentally deleted your comment and I am horrified at myself! The only way I could retrieve it was to copy and paste- so it looks like the comment is coming from me. Sorry!
On another note- I totally agree with you and I am completely disgusted that this would be a teachers response to a student. I will work on this issue because these things should not happen to kids. Please accept my apology on behalf of the adult that acted so very nasty. Thank you Lydia!

  14. something i would change about ma school would be the dress code i really dnt like the dress code because ur not really comfortable, and u dnt really get top express ur self. something else i would change is summer reading i think it would be better if we get to choose our own books not the books the teachers tell us to read

  15. I would like to change 1 thing about my school. It's dress code, because i think kids my age should be allowed to express themselves in different ways, 1 of them being the clothes they wear.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I would change the school uniform so we could were any shirt we want and blue jeans.I would also change the rules of the school like not to wear our ID'S and have more fieldtrips oh and also wear hoodies when its cold like in winter

  22. It seems like dress coded is an issue for most of you all. Is this a uniform thing? (you don't like uniforms?)

To anonymous with the xbox room wish- does your library have a Wii yet, or do you just like the Xbox better?

  23. I think school dress code is a big issue. Over here at Springwoods they alow us to have free shirt fridays but I mean wearing whatever we want will allow us to be more comfterble and make us feel good about our appearence. Im not saying for girls to wear booty shorts and guys to sagg, im just saying it would be nicer and saves us more money for us to wear whatever we wanted. It wouldnt hurt to atleast try it for like a week or so.

  24. i would change our dress code at spring woods middle school where there is no uniforms

  27. If I could change one thing about my school it would be the dress code to instead of wearing uniforms all of the time we could wear whatever we want.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Something I would change it would be the school dress code so the kids can wear no uniform.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. NO UNIFORMS! I can understand that SOME kids don't have enough money to buy new jeans and stuff, but that shouldn't be a problem...if you ask me.

    2. VIDEO GAMES! There are physical and mentally educational video games out there (for example, Wii Sports or Brain Academy).

    3. CLUBS DURING ACTIVITY/ADVISORY! My dad won't let me join any clubs afterschool because he won't be able to pick me up, so if we had clubs during the day, I would be really happy (and not clubs like Student Council or NJHS, I mean stuff like an Anime Club or a TWILIGHT Club).

  31. What I would change about my school is the dress code. I dont like wearing uniforms. I would also what to change the school food, most of the time it's nasty and not cooked right. I would want better tasting food. Another thing i would like to change it's the time it starts. School starts too early, i would want it to start at 10:00 a.m. from SWMS

    :(

    ReplyDelete
  38. I will pass the food comment along- I am not a very good cook, so not a good person to ask about cooking :).

I agree with offering more "club" kinds of activities after school. I think we have lots of kids who cannot get to outside "club" sports. Thanks for sending that one in.

We are going to send a survey out soon, asking kids what kinds of after school activities they want to do. Be sure to fill it out!

  39. I Would Definetly Change The Dresss Code..And That We Could Use Our Phones.:)

  40. If were was to change something about our school is the computers...i would rather have laptops than desktops. It would be better if we would get better internet access too.

    ReplyDelete
  41. If i could change something i would change it so that teachers are fun and not boring. I hate boring teachers, and would rather sleep in class. I'd also make it where teachers teach. I go to a hihgschool for one class and hate it when she makes us learn from the book. I don't learn as well if i don't do some kind of work.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would change the uniform and i would change the lunch food.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I would change the dress code and lunch.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well, like everyone else, I'd say I would change the "no uniforms" here @ Spring Woods Middle School. Something I think I can pretty much figure out is that my word nor anyone else's on this matter is going to change a thing. I personally don't think one person can make a difference. (yeah..i know. shame on me.) I understand that here at this school (and other schools) there is the "gang" issue or people who don't have enough money to buy "non-unforms" for school, but seriously! It costs more money for us to have to buy uniforms. I think that the school should take away uniforms, but still have to follow a certain dress code (pants not sagging, no tight clothes...etc.) and if there are kids that choose not to follow these rules, then uniform should be taken away from THOSE individuals. Not the whole entire school. (or district). But of course, knowing you adults, there is always going to be some "issue" that prevents us kids from being comfortable when learning...so therefore I know this stupid long message isn't going to make one bit of a difference in our school.

  50. What i would like to change about my school would be to not leave homework for almost every class... i mean it would be good if we only had one homework everyday from each class...we only have 4 subjects one day for one different hw... and then Fridays we don't get anything...which is great cause no one wants to be working on the only two days we get without school... i'm saying this because i'm a pastor's daughter and it's really hard for me to finish up everything when your parents are always out in conferences or dtuff like that... so please take this in to consideration...
    Sincerely,

  63. To JB: I;m the one who said that my comment wasn't going to make one bit of difference about the uniform issue (yesterday). We have talked to our principles here @ SWMS, but they can't seem to get it throught their thick heads that it is costing us $ we don't have. If they would just let us wear jeans, I would bet A LOT of money that our grades would go up, because uniforms are distracting b/c they are so uncomfortable. With jeans, we would be able to be comfortable, and that is one less thing for us to have to think about when we are trying to get our classwork done. So if you could please please please please PLEASE do something about this in our school (Spring Woods Middle School) we would ALL appreciate it. ( I speak for everyone here, b/c i know that i am not the only one with these feelings)....(again...i still dont know why i am typing this: you can't help it...you just say that you can so we will shut up and leave you alone, right?)

  70. Anonymous- I do care what you say and I don't just answer you to get you to "shut up." I do care what you say and I wouldn't have created this blog if I didn't want to hear your thoughts. I guess what I am trying to say is that I think your approach could be different on the dress code issue. Have you thought about not making this so "we have to have it our way or no way?" Instead, why don't you all put together some ideas about how to meet the adults half way on this issue. Do you really have to wear what you want every day, or, could you compromise that one day a week (to start with) you could have a pass on the uniform. For those kids who wear something really crazy and inappropriate, they could have that one day taken away. For the rest of you, you could prove that you are worthy of following appropriate dress and wearing what you want. I am not trying to sound like a drippy old person, but seriously..... you guys need to think differently about how everyone can win here- the adults and the kids. I am not sure what else to say on this. If you want something to change, you have to advocate for it! You all are smart- I can tell by your comments. Think differently about how to get what you want......

  71. I am a.d.d and contrary to popular belief it is not a mental sickness. Many famous genius people have shown the symptoms of low attention and daydreaming. Thomas Eddison was called addled by his teacher. He had a hard time paying attention. Albert Einstein could not talk till age 3 and was called slow and lazy by his teacher. I believe that my a.d.d causes my high creativity and that I have the ability to see things other people can't because they aren't like me. Unfortunately schools are not accepting of us. They label us as stupid sometimes. We begin to believe we're stupid and we are less and less accepted by the students around us. It hurts when you do this when we begin to think of ourselves as idiots incapable of succeeding. This style of learning and work you enforce upon us doesn't work because we a.d.d.ers are explorers. We learn by exploration. You may have seen how many of us a.d.ders have flocked to the internet. We do this because the internet provides an exploratory way for us to learn. We click on links relative to our interests and if something is uninteresting to us we simply navigate somewhere else. However in schools this type of learning is not used it is not how most of the kids learn. We are instead told what to learn and how to learn it in a process called memorization. We adders don't memorize we understand. We dive down into the base of a subject and figure out how it works usually by trial and error. At current point I find it impossible to concentrate at school and I have such little social ability. Everyone thinks I'm crazy and weird because I'm forgetful, too highly creative and don't relate to people. I don't want to follow the standard behavior of people I want to be different but we are not so accepting of difference. I'm currently coasting along the edge of grades finding it hard to care. I am the creative. I am the inattentive. I am the impulsive. I am the smart. I am the hacker. I am the a.d.d. Expect us to rebel and day dream and criticize your institution. We are radical, illogical, smart, intuitive and inventive. We are the puzzle solvers and your institution is the odd piece out. Expect me... Expect us!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Interesting comment- I actually think most kids prefer experential learning rather than drill and memorization. The research actually supports this for most kids, not just those with a.d.d. I do, however, think we all have to learn to adjust to various types of learning environments, even if it doesn't best meet our needs. Having said this, I am inclined to agree with you that most kids need more hands on, experiential learning within the coursework.
What would be your suggestion to change the system?

    ReplyDelete
  73. I really think the ID's are annoying and I hate wearing them. So if i could change one thing about my school it would be that.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'm from spring woods high school and one thing that I would want to change the way the teachers teach. I like it when the teacher shows me how to do something and guide us through not just say what to do and assign us work and assume we already know what to do.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I would give the school a makeover and make it looks a bit more sophisticated.

    ReplyDelete
  76. springwoods student,

i would change our cafeteria food.

    ReplyDelete
  77. If I could change something about school, it would be the use of electronic devices, at least between passing periods, and lunch. I had my mp3 player taken from me in 9th grade, then the principle lost it. I just don't see any harm in it, just a rule that has no point.

    -Josh

  78. I believe one thing that should change at Spring Woods is the seniors having off campus lunch. The lunch is not always great, and I believe the seniors who are older and much more responsible than the lower classman should be able to go off campus to get something to eat. I mean we have about four fast food places right across the street from school, which mean students wouldn't even have to go that far to get to something to eat. I think it is more of privilege than a right because I sure some people will abuse it, but i believe they should get the right taken from them. Also Memorial has it also. That's what I think should change at Spring Woods High.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I believe we should have the privilege of the use of iPods, as long as the teacher is not lecturing or reqesting the full attention of their students. On the other hand, if the student is working and does not require the use of their listening, the use of such devices should be allowed.

i would like to bring my cell phone to class and dont have to worry about getting taken up by a teacher or principle. also add alittle bit more time during passing periods so we can have more people showing up to class on time.

  81. Hey am a student that goes to Spring Woods High School. A thing I would change about my school might be the fact that when you get your lunch the line is to long to settle down and have a peaceful lunch!

    ReplyDelete
  82. If there are somethings I would change is that study hall schould be offered to juniors just not seniors. Also that there schould be NO SUMMER reading it take away from summmer. The most important thing that I think schould change would be NO HOMEWORK over the weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  83. One thing I might change is probably the random activities. I know I said earlier that there should be activities in the classroom, but I meant activities that correlate with the class. Like a math activity for the math class that gets to the point. Not just "beading around the bush" as my english teacher would say.

  85. If I could change one thing about my school it would be Summer Reading. Because all three times I done it I had forgot about which book to read and fail the first nine weeks because of the reading book.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I believe in my opinion that seniors should have the oppurtunity to leave campus during lunch to have a good lunch. Since the cafeteria lunch is not so great and appetizing. And we pay for something that we dont like to eat but we are hungry so we have no choice but to eat what they provide. But instead we can be using that money for something that we actually enjoy eating. Seniors should have this option due to us handling the responsibility to come back to campus and resume with our schedules and handle the consequences if not. Plus seniors have been eating the cafeteria for the past 11 school years.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Cafeteria food (from any school) can be brutal- I agree. I will pass your comment along. Thanks!

  88. I would change the homework load. I'm in all AP classes and I'm part of the drill team. With at least 3 to 5 hours of homework every night, I have no time to be involved in anything else, such as church events, spending time with family/friends, and just time to relax. My homework also keeps me up late often so I can't function the next day due to a lack of sleep. It is my junior year, so I know that it's supposed to be the hardest, but I'm constantly stressed out about not having sufficient time to study and complete assignments. I start my homework as soon as I get home from practice, and I work at a normal pace, but I still find myself spending all my free time on homework.
    -MHS

    ReplyDelete
  89. Dear Homework Load--

I absolutely understand that you are stressed- it sounds like you are taking a very heavy load. It isn't healthy for you to not be able to other activities outside of school. Taking all AP classes is tough- in essence you are in all college courses. Although that is a choice you are making- please remember that being involved in outside activities with your friends is a very important part of growing up. Please take time to enjoy personal time too.

  91. the homework!!i would want them to tone down with how much homework the teachers gives us everyday. with the hours that i spend on my homework is about 4-5 hrs almost every night. i dont get the sleep that i need because im either studying or finishing a big load of homework. its hard for me to do out school activies that i wish to be apart of,i cant go to church events, cant go out to dinner with my family or friends anymore, and no time for sport training

    ReplyDelete
  92. the lunch schedule!
we only have 30 min to eat and have a break from school, we are here for 7 hours straight with non stop learning, i feel as if maybe a longer lunch/ break time would help us be more concentrated in class since we would get a chance to refresh our minds!

    ReplyDelete
  93. The lunch schedule!
Stratford High school only has a 30 min lunch, even though its a great school, we are in school for 7 hours straight! i think that a longer break would be better since it gives us time to eat and refresh our mind!
    GO SPARTANS.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Yes, the lunch schedule!
i also think that there should be a longer lunch break at Stratford High. I love the school but i think students should be able to enjoy a longer break away from the stresses during class

    ReplyDelete
  95. School is important. Stratford High School has many inconvenience's and there are many things worth changing. School is here for education, it is a gift, a gift i am grateful for. Education is a wonderful thing, but I think it should be more fun. SHS has very many fun activities but there is so much more to achieve in our "fun" lives.

    ReplyDelete
  96. At Stratford, we use a lot of paper for a lot of things; homework, notes, handouts, etc. I think since we are in a time where we really need to watch our paper consumption, the schools should provide students with laptops for our everyday school useage. I know that us high school students are not very careful with technology, especially if its not ours, but if we had to buy it or pay for the laptop if it was broken or had problems, then we would be much more careful. It would help us not lose papers in a clutter of homework that is several weeks late because we could directly email it to our teachers.

    ReplyDelete
  97. At Stratford the best classes are the ones with the laid back teachers. They do care about getting homework on time but the way they teach makes doing the homework more enjoyable rather than repulsive. And i wish all the class rooms had the environment of Mrs. Cummons newspaper class, it makes school fun!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I wish we would be allowed to grow facial hair other than mustaches because it is not like we aren't going to keep it well trimmed. We are not going for the cave man look, it would be a lot easier to not have to come to school and be harassed about having some stubble. If they would let us, like they do in HISD it would make school more enjoyable even if it is just a little

    ReplyDelete
  99. amen to the comment above about facial hair.If teachers and administrators want us to act like adults they need to get rid of these childish rules about facial hair.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I think there should be more pep rallys for school spirit!! My school recently got a new principle who cut a couple of pep rallys and i personally feel it makes us not have as much spirit. Pep rallys cut 5 minutes from each class. I don't think those 5 minutes are very essential.

  104. If one thing could be change in my school is the dress code. I think this, because our uniform is rely uncomfortable. And also it doesn't express us. Our uniform is simple. No collar. When we were the clothing we want it's show our seance of fashion or our stile. So I a student form Spring Woods Middle think we should change the uniform.

  119. I would change the behaviors and moral/ethical value of the students WITHIN the school, so that all can treat one-another with respect, love, dignity, and chivalry. Many say that "chivalry is dead." It isn't! Chivalry is just in hiding in a small, run-down cottage in the middle of the African Sahara desert! Haha, I believe that if one changes the people WITHIN the school, then the school itself will change!

    Thank you for your time,

  121. I think that change begins with ourselves. We have to change before wanting others to change. I would change from my school the attitude and the way students think. You can't say something simple or nice because they think a really bad way.

  122. I compeletle agree with him, we need to change the people's attitude so they will be nicer to each other. so, if the people change the school wil to. We also need an expolration team to find chivalry! LOL Gabe

  123. I believe that nike tempo shorts should be allowed . Our new assitant principal , and teachers have been have been geting on us . But when they say no nike shorts we see other kids in the hall wall wearing them . It is not fair . The dress code was fine last year but now that we have new people around , things kinda kali-wanpi. They are comturable, fit for everday activities. Not too short.
